Opposing Viewpoints at Work - Copeland Coaching

Opposing Viewpoints at Work 2017 has certainly started off on an interesting foot. I don’t know about you, but social media used to be a relaxing activity where I learned about engagements, saw baby photos, and watched cat videos. Lately, it’s filled with opposing views and tension â€" on all sides of every issue. It’s exhausting. I have friends on both sides of the aisle, and some from other aisles too. I see them thoughtfully speaking out about their concerns. Regardless of your views, there’s a decent chance the past few months have not been a cakewalk. And, the level of frustration we’ve all been experiencing can sometimes lead us to reevaluate things in our lives. I know a number of people who are cleaning out their Facebook friends list â€" eliminating anyone who doesn’t share their perspectives. And more than before, job seekers are scrutinizing the personal values of their future boss and coworkers. They’re not sure they want to work with people who have different viewpoints than theirs. The question becomes â€" where do we draw the line? After all, we spend eight waking hours a day at work. I can relate to this type of struggle myself. In a similar way, I have shied away from industries that make products or services I’m not completely comfortable with for one reason or another. As you can imagine, deciding where to work is a very personal decision and one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. However, with that said, you may want to weigh how much your personal views play into the work you do. If you didn’t know your boss had an opposing view to you, would it still matter? Could you still do your work? The other thing I’d like to consider is this. There was once a time when we were more open to making friends with those who are different than we are. I really liked that time. It allowed me to grow up in a place like Oklahoma and move to places like New York and California where I met people who grew up with very different ideas than I did. This openness has allowed me to make close friends from cities all over the U.S. and countries all over the world. I rarely meet someone with whom I agree on every issue. But, it doesn’t mean that we can’t be friends, or that I can’t work to have a better understanding of their perspectives. However, with all the time we spend there, work is something we’re practically married to. And, if it just doesn’t work for you to work with someone with values that are different than yours, I get it. But, wouldn’t it be great to put these frustrating thoughts on a shelf for just a few hours each day, to focus just on work? Perhaps we could make a few great things happens for eight hours each day with a diverse team of people, who all bring different views and strengths to the table. How to Thrive in an Entrepreneurial Environment

The most effective method to Thrive in an Entrepreneurial Environment The most effective method to Thrive in an Entrepreneurial Environment This is a visitor post by Nkatha Gitonga for Student Stories. Collegial! This was the main depiction that struck a chord when I got some information about the organization culture. The playing field was essentially level and chains of importance were liquid. He proceeded to discussion of the enterprising idea of the firm, and how he had been engaged with a tad of everything during his stay at the firm. I was energized. Terms like business and advancement, and their different equivalent words seemed a few times on my resume. I exemplified what the organization was about. I was going to sparkle! after 3 weeks, I was not really sparkling. Truth be told, it felt as though I was simply scratching by, scarcely enduring. I had a lot to learn. The most significant exercise; in spite of the fact that I esteemed business enterprise, and I had been depicted as inventive and imaginative, it took in excess of a couple of descriptive words to kick my vocation off. Here are a couple of exercises I learned on my street to flourishing in an enterprising domain. 1. Conclusiveness and proficiency are profoundly significant in a pioneering domain Regardless of whether you are working at a startup or a little firm, the quantity of undertakings in many cases outperforms the quantity of representatives, and in some cases, even their skill. Your capacity to experience undertakings, to take them on without reservation, and to dependably deliver the normal outcomes will advance you beyond in this world. In a little firm, there will be less individuals with the will or time to continually oversee you. Being productive at your undertaking, be that as it may, and holding fast to a self-characterized course of events will guarantee that you can finish one anticipate, and are hence free for the following energizing venture. 2. Try not to avoid difficulties or elevated level errands It is safe to say that you are worried you're sufficiently bad? Numerous individuals are, however they will never let you know, and hence, they won't avoid difficulties that take steps to uncover their insufficiencies. Use difficulties and elevated level errands as a chance to demonstrate to yourself as well as other people that you can be something beyond sufficient. At the point when your insight and aptitudes don't coordinate the main job, put your time and assets into learning the abilities you need; take proprietorship for the achievement of the undertaking, however when you run into explicit issues, request partner input. 3. Make educators and companions out of your associates The degree of seriousness changes across firms, yet it ought not avoid learning, and neither should it reject kinship. Your associates have ranges of abilities and information that you don't. Show acknowledgment for the assignments they progress nicely and afterward want to gain from them. Neighborly rivalry offers a more learning-helpful and results-situated condition than antagonistic rivalry. Be an advocate of neighborly rivalry by concentrating more on whether the nature of your outcomes mirror your full ability, as opposed to on whether they are better than your colleague's. What's more, except if you need to, do whatever it takes not to decrease solicitations to partner occasions, theyre an incredible method to interface on an increasingly close to home, as opposed to proficient level. 4. Investigate all roads for development The innovative condition of a developing firm has numerous open doors for development. Your associates are potential educators. The company's accomplices, authors or financial specialists are for the most part potential tutors. Each errand is an opportunity for you to propel your insight and aptitudes. So exploit at whatever point conceivable. Now and then we know about what we have to do to develop, yet we can't do it. Recollect that you, as a great many people and establishments, are a work in progress. About the Author: Nkatha Gitonga is a senior at Harvard contemplating Sociology and Health Policy. 5 Social Media Mistakes Made by Executive Job Searchers

5 Social Media Mistakes Made by Executive Job Searchers 5 Social Media Mistakes Made by Executive Job Searchers Hiring managers and recruiters are using social media more than ever to find and pre-screen candidates, and they're not just using LinkedIn. As a result it’s important to avoid some of these major social media mistakes while doing your executive job search. Not having a professional online presence. Perhaps one of the biggest mistakes job hunters make is not having a professional online presence. This results in recruiters finding a lot of personal photos and musings but nothing about how you’re a great candidate for the job. Having your professional history and achievements documented online is a crucial component to recruiters and hiring managers seeing you as a thought leader and contributor to your profession and industry. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that because you use Facebook to connect with friends and family that it shouldn’t be professional. The same goes for Twitter. The truth is you never know who is watching and recruiters are pre-screening candidates on social media more than ever before. Bad-mouthing companies on social media. Similar to bad-mouthing former employers in a job interview, bad-mouthing any company on social media can make you look like an unprofessional loose cannon. The key to remember here is that this includes any company, not just your former employers. Reason being that a recruiter may see that you’ve bad-mouthed a similar product or service. Furthermore, companies are merging so fast it’s hard to keep up so you might accidentally bad-mouth the potential employer. Lastly, it is important to demonstrate sound judgment and decorum online, as how you conduct yourself online will ultimately be a reflection of the company that hires you. Being inappropriate online. Take the Senator Andrew Weiner and US Airways’ social media mishaps as a cautionary tale: if you’re indiscreet on social media it will blow up in your face. Remember, the entire world is looking at what you post online so make sure to keep it clean and appropriate. In fact, recent data from CareerBuilder and Forbes showed that 65% of recruiters use social media to see a candidate’s professionalism in terms of social conduct. Make sure what they are seeing is authentic, but appropriate. Undermining your own accomplishments. Many people hate to talk about their accomplishments in person. It turns out they also feel uncomfortable doing it online. However, if you don’t tell the recruiter how good you are, they’re not going to know. This applies both online and in the real world. Make sure to share your accomplishments on your social media pages. You should also do it in real time for a better effect. In other words, don’t wait until three months after you receive an award to announce it on social media. Oversharing information. You need to avoid overwhelming recruiters with a lot if information at once. This is easily avoidable on Twitter where you only have 140 characters to work with, however it can be a challenge on LinkedIn and Facebook. Rather than cloning your resume on LinkedIn or writing essays on Facebook try short sentences and bullet points. You can also always link to all your other profiles where the recruiter can find more information. By the way, make sure that all your profiles are up to date when you do this.
